Islamists win in Turkey PDF Print E-mail
Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan secured a third term in office. His Justice and Development Party (AKP) won 50% of the vote. In his victory speech, Mr Erdogan said Bosnians, Lebanese, Syrians and Palestinians also benefited from his victory. (BBC, 13 Jun 2011)
France Veil Ban Implemented PDF Print E-mail
Two women detained in France while wearing Islamic veils, after a law banning the garment in public came into force. France is the first country in Europe to publicly ban a form of dress Muslims regard as a religious duty. Offenders face a fine of 150 euros (£133; $217) and a citizenship course. A UK poll showed that 65% said they were not religious. 27% of those who ticked 'Christian' said they didn't believe that Jesus was a real person who died and came back to life and was the son of God, while 25% were unsure. (, 21 Mar 2011)

The Turkish action film, Valley of the Wolves: Palestine, has been critisized as anti-Semitic. It shows Israelis as brutal oppressors of Palestinians. In it three Turkish special forces operatives shoot their way through Palestine to avenge the real-life Israeli attack on a Turkish aid ship to Gaza that left 9 dead. Ban on Scarves Ends PDF Print E-mail
The ban on headscarves at Turkish universities ended quietly when the government issued a statement saying it would support any student expelled or disciplined for covering her head. Now almost all universities across Turkey have abandoned the official prohibition on women wearing headscarves. Millions of Turkish women wear headscarves: it is estimated that at least 60% cover their heads. (BBC, 31 Dec 2010)
