The level, extent and duration of abuse by Belgian Christian clergy shocked even members of the commission set up by the Church to investigate. It found that abuse occurred at the hands of priests, teachers, lay workers and bishops, and totalled over 300 cases. (BBC, 13 Sep 2010)

60 years ago Pont-Saint-Esprit was hit by hallucinations, which left 5 dead and many seriously ill. It was blamed on contaminated bread but a US journalist found a CIA document suggesting the CIA was experimenting on the people by dosing them with the LSD drug. (BBC, 23 Aug 2010)
Oil Pipeline Explosion PDF Print E-mail
An explosion hit an oil pipeline in south-east Turkey, killing two. The Kurdish separatist group, PKK, is suspected to have detonated a mine next to the pipeline. (BBC, 10 Aug 2010)

German police shut down the Taiba Musjid in Hamburg claiming its asociated cultural organisation is suspected of helping extremists. Investigators suspect that members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan met there before going to a jihadist training camp. (BBC, 9 Aug 2010)

Chechen Mujahid leader Doku Umarov, who fought in both wars against Russia, is to resign, handing over to a younger comrade. He is leader of the Caucasus Emirate, an armed Islamist movement seeking liberation of the mainly Muslim territories occupied by Russia in the North Caucasus. (BBC, 1 Aug 2010)

UK Prime Minister David Cameron condemned the Jewish blockade of the Gaza Strip, describing the territory as a prison camp. He also criticised Israel for attacking a convoy transporting activists and aid to Gaza. (BBC, 27 July 2010)
Fines for Insulting French Flag PDF Print E-mail
Those who insult the French flag could face a 1,500 euro fine. France introduced a rule to protect its national flag from insult after a photo of a man wiping his bottom with it won a prize in a photo contest and was published in a national newspaper. (BBC, 23 July 2010) Ironically the French government plans to ban the Hijab, which Muslims revere in public, while sanctifying their piece of cloth, the flag.

Two Spanish activists and a journalist arrested in a raid by Israel on a Gaza-bound flotilla are filing charges against Israel's prime minister, accusing him of illegal detention, torture and deportation. (BBC, 23 July 2010)

The bishop of Hamburg, the world's first female Lutheran bishop, resigned amid criticism of her handling of a sex abuse case. Several cases in Germany form part of sex abuse scandals that have hit the Roman Catholic Church recently. (BBC, 15 July 2010)

Banning the wearing of the Islamic full veil in public would be 'un-British', UK immigration minister Damian Green has said. It comes after Tory MP Philip Hollobone introduced a private members' bill which would make it illegal for people to cover their faces in public.
