The Case of Sudan PDF Print E-mail

Sudan Flag
When the world’s newest country came into existence on 9 July 2011 as South Sudan, the world led by USA rushed in with congratulatory messages. Seemingly a simple case of a country whose people wanted independence. But a look behind the scenes reveals the murky world of anti-Muslim politics:

America gave the south Sudan rebels every possible support. In 2008 a shipment of T-72 tanks, anti aircraft guns and other armaments sent by the US was intercepted. The reason given: to support the democratic aspirations of an oppressed people.
This aid has been conspicuous by its absence in the case of Muslim states fighting for independence against oppressive regimes: neither Kashmir nor Palestine can boast such support. In fact, the US actively supports the regimes oppressing the Muslims in these cases.
The US hyped South Sudan’s as the Christian south fighting an oppressive Muslim north. The facts are different: the south has largely pagan African beliefs with a tiny Christian minority. Facts are twisted to serve an ulterior purpose.
A look at some Muslim countries fighting for independence shows that Muslims made up 95% of the population of Kashmir Valley in 2005. Chechnya in 2002 was 94% Muslim, while Palestine was 85% Muslim in 1850 and 80% in 1920. Where is support for the people’s aspirations? South Sudan’s rebels are called freedom fighters while Palestinians, Chechens and Kashmiris are labeled militants.
As in the case of other Muslim countries, the rule is: we will support people’s aspirations as long as it’s not Islam. In south Sudan, the real motive is oil. The south produces 85% of Sudan’s oil. By supporting south Sudan’s rebels, USA now has access to another source of fuel, and a springboard for imperialism in East Africa.
But, like all of USA’s imperialist adventures, this one is not going to be smooth sailing. There are at least 7 rebel groups in south Sudan, all vying for power. Yet another country, like Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Central America, seems to be headed for a mess-up in the wake of serving America’s personal interests.
