SA Muslim
SA Muslim
The Muslims of South Africa are uniquely situated. Far from the Muslim heartland, and given their small numbers one would have thought they would have little or no impact on the Muslim world. That is patently not the case:

HUMANITARIAN
The recent Africa 1 Convoy taking aid to Gaza is a wonderful example. Where big Muslim nations have not been allowed to take in aid, South Africa’s Muslims launched a two-pronged attack in the war to liberate Palestine: About 120 South Africans went to the West Bank in Ramadan to spend Itikaf in Musjidul Aqsa, while a smaller group entered Gaza with the aid and met with Hamas.

Likewise, Muslim humanitarian aid groups from South Africa respond to worldwide tragedies from Pakistan to Haiti. South Africa’s Muslims sponsor Qurbanis in places like India, Malawi and Mozambique.

EDUCATION
The composition of students at our Darul Ulooms reveals a staggering statistic: There are an ever-growing number of foreigners from countries as diverse as Thailand and USA coming to study Islam at South Africa’s Darul Ulooms. This is amazing when one remembers that Islam started in South Africa among slaves.

Some of the most popular English-language Fatwa sites in the world are run under the supervision of Muftis from South Africa.

REVIVAL
Another heartening feature is that Ulama from South Africa are now working on reviving Islam in countries like Ukraine, Russia and Venezuela. Small numbers mean nothing when Allah decrees that something will be effective.

From Madresas for the blind to Islamic publications, South Africa’s Muslims are exporting Islam across the globe. Muslim radio stations from South Africa are listened to around the world. It is a time to reflect on our achievements but not sit on our laurels. There is much more that needs to be done within our own country as well.

Nevertheless, appreciating this gift that Allah has given us will result in us receiving more of it.
